Creating a better home through design

Studio One was founded in 1966 by John Johnson, a retired school technical teacher turned furniture maker. A new wave of optimism during the 60’s led to a revived interest in home decor after the long period of austerity following the Second World War. Music, art and literature were all undergoing exciting change, foreign travel was on the rise, and furniture was to go through a fundamental change, too.

A camel was used as the company’s logo to represent traders on the Silk Road travelling far and wide to bring the best items in the world to market.

John’s passion for design led him to set up many different ventures in Edinburgh and over the years he successfully ran the Cook Shop, a record shop and a sofa shop, not to mention countless exhibitions. Studio One Furniture and Paper Tiger are still thriving.

David Horn took over Studio One Furniture shop in 1997 and continues to run the business personally, carrying on the Studio One design led approach to buying.

Kerr and Lindsay work alongside David ensuring customers receive the personal service and advice that can only exist in small independent shops. So please pay us a visit next time you’re in Morningside, where you can be assured of a warm welcome!
